Family & Community/Science 1 Combo Online with Books

Family and Community and Science 1 are available together as a two-for-one special. These combined courses include two single-semester courses covering social studies and science.

Family and Community teaches children about family, communities, jobs, land, and the United States. Each topic will be presented within the framework of God’s redemptive plan. Mrs. Lawson focuses on the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in the social studies.

Special features:

• Heritage Kids - A special-segment series in which characters from the textbook participate in scenarios that illustrate topics.
• Who? What? When? - A special-segment series that introduces famous people.
• Pop in with Lewis - A special-segment series with Lewis the lion that gives background information, videos, and pictures to help children explore different topics.

Science 1 introduces children to basic science process skills and topics including plants, animals, the human body, earth, space, light, and sound. Mrs. Overly wants her students to develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for God’s creation so they can begin to understand foundational science facts and skills from a biblical worldview.

Special Features:

• Science Brain - A special-segment series with a student scientist who discusses STEM careers, famous scientists, and science concepts.
• Chapter Reviews with Mr. Beaks - A special-segment series giving students review time with our toucan friend, Mr. Beaks.

For both courses, children should have their student editions and student activities pages ready for the lesson. Children should be prepared to follow along in their books for reading-skill development, but they do not need to be able to read.

Scheduling Information: Heritage Studies 1 and Science 1 are two 90-day (one-semester courses) designed to give 180 total days of work for social studies and science learning. We recommend beginning the year with Heritage Studies 1 and ending with Science 1.

Mrs. Debra Overly, B.S.,M.S.

Mrs. Overly, a mother of three, has experience teaching several elementary grades. "I want to encourage each child to look forward to learning each day and also to provide sufficient practice and review activities to help alleviate mom’s workload. Most importantly, I want to present Christ in each subject that I teach. Each child should hear the gospel and then see in a very practical way how it can change a sinner."
