Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era

Enjoy the show as your children act out the history they’ve been reading, or even create new stories and scenarios. This book provides the movable paper figures; they/you provide the imagination.

Each of the 21 famous people in this book comes in two versions: one pre-colored and one to color. The card stock pages make sturdy paper dolls, wearing historically accurate costumes. You may laminate the pages before cutting them out to strengthen them for younger children.

A brief biographical note on each figure is also included, along with a list of resources. This item makes a great supplement to The Story of the World, Volume 3.

FIGURES INCLUDED:  Mary, Queen of Scots; James I; Samuel de Champlain; Queen Nzinga; Shah Jahan; Pocahontas; Rembrandt; Louis XIV; Isaac Newton; William Penn; Peter the Great; Johann Sebastian Bach; Ch'ien-lung; Captain James Cook; Catherine the Great; William Wilberforce; Napoleon Bonaparte; Robert Fulton; William Clark; Simón Bolívar; Sacagawea

** Please note the following material is needed but not included:

  • two 100-count boxes of mini-brads and a
  • 1/8-inch hole punch.

Suggestions for using these figures to supplement your history curriculum, unit study, or as a stand alone activity:

  • Color and assemble the figures during a history lesson, unit study, read aloud time, or just for fun.
  • Decorate a time line with assembled figures. The figures are 12 to 13 inches tall, so you may want to put your timeline on the wall.
  • Read a biography of someone in our books (reading lists are included) then make and use the figure as a prop to narrate a short summary of his or her life.
  • Put on a play with historical figures interacting or make up your own stories. Use people from different time periods and try to imagine what they would say to each other.
  • Include figures in a lap-book project or with a written report.
  • Make puppets with string, craft sticks or pipe cleaners and put on a play.
  • Produce a stop-motion animation clip using magnets or felt on the back of the figures.
