Josh Ladd becomes an unwilling paddler when King Kong, the local bully, challenges neighbor boys to a Hawaiian outrigger canoe race. Josh and the other boys play by the rules, but not Kong. The unexpected results involve being caught in a monstrous storm at sea, a sinking canoe, a dramatic rescue and a lesson about the difference between winning and how you play the game.
Chapter 14 - Race For Life
Josh instinctively closed his eyes to protect them against the stinging salt spray. When he opened them again, the canoe was half-filled with water. We’re going to swamp! his mind screamed, but Roger’s voice cut through Josh’s fear. “No time to bail! Everybody keep paddling. Power ten! Paddle like you never have before!” Josh tore his gaze from the waterspout, which still chased them like a hound on a hot trail. It’s gaining on us! he thought wildly. He wanted to cry out with fear, but he couldn’t even speak. He needed all his energy to paddle. He looked ahead of them to see how close the canoe was to land. He couldn’t see the shore because a curtain of hard rain hung between the outrigger and safety.
