VideoText Algebra is designed to thoroughly cover all aspects of Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2, laying a firm foundation for students to advance into VideoText Geometry: A Complete Course. As it covers lessons in a mastery approach, concepts are divided into small "bite-sized" chunks of information that examine how and why a particular prodecure works.
This course starts at the pre-algebra level, with a focus on number concepts that are foundational for algebra: fractions, decimals, operations, prime numbers, signed numbers, etc. It continues into a mix of the concepts that make up both Algebra I and Algebra II courses, but teaching algebraic concepts in a different sequence than is common to most other programs. Equations and inequalities are taught together; concepts are developed in order of degrees (first degree relations, second degree relations, rational relations, literal degree relations, and so on); logical continuity and mastery of the concepts is the goal from lesson to lesson.
This course employs a "mastery method" of learning which differs from the "spiral learning" approach. The mastery method ensures that students master a particular concept before going on to the next. Additionally, the building approach takes the information just learned and uses it in the lessons which follow. This virtually eliminates the need for repeating previously covered lessons.
The VTI Algebra: A Complete Course Program includes:
The course is divided into six modules, which should take approximately one to three months each to complete. The entire program is equivalent to two years of high school algebra plus a supplemental pre-algebra course.
The main components of the VTI Program are the "videotext" (video lessons on DVD) and the student worktext. The video lessons are the textbook and there are approximately 30 lessons per module. Each DVD lesson runs five to ten minutes and should be watched without taking notes. Videos use computer generated graphics, animation, and color sequencing to illustrate the lessons; the emphasis is on understanding the concept rather than memorizing the process. The second step involves the course notes and student worktext that are included with each module. Also included in each module is the student solutions manual, progress tests, and instructor's guide with detailed solutions to the progress tests.
One of the most effective parts of the VideoText program is the 5-step method of learning. For every lesson your student should complete the following 5 steps:
*You may choose to do either the odd or even exercises for that lesson and do not have to do ALL of them. It is important to show EVERY step of the process on notebook paper. These daily exercises are completed in “open-book” fashion, using any reference available to the student.
**Understand, each Quiz is a “gatekeeper” that tells you whether you really understand the concept, and if you are ready to move to the next lesson.
Grade Level specifics:
It is generally recommended that a student begin this program in grade 8 or 9. Grade 10-11 students who are struggling will find this course extremely helpful in getting them back on track, and will probably be able to move through the program more quickly than a younger student.
If a student has completed grade 6 math with relative mastery, they could reasonably be ready to start the VideoText Algebra course in grade 7, especially since Module A “reteaches” all of the arithmetic concepts which will be used in a study of Algebra.
